Trigger points can develop as a result of muscular injuries, strains, and trauma. When muscle fibers, fascia, ligaments, or tendons become weakened, overstretched, or inflamed, tiny tears in the associated soft tissue can occur. As the tissue heals it contracts, becoming twisted and knotted. These knotted fibers restrict the fresh blood supply needed by the muscle cells. In addition, there is often a shortening of the muscle fiber to protect itself from further injury.

When these become chronic, trigger points can trigger other trigger points to develop. Then we have a vicious cycle of pain and restriction. Trigger points will often cause pain far beyond the location of the actual trigger point with can further serve to fog the diagnostic process.

Conventional treatment of trigger points with compression, dry needling, and injections are both painful and offer limited relief. PBM has been found to be a superior way to resolve trigger points with lasting effect and no to minimal discomfort in most cases.

More than 20 million people in the USA have been estimated to have some form of peripheral neuropathy, but this figure may be significantly higher. Neuropathy pain can range from a mild annoyance to near disabling pain. Diagnosing the cause of neuropathic pain can be difficult and some patients are compromised in several ways. Fibromyalgia is a syndrome marked by chronic, widespread pain in the muscles and soft tissues with defined points of tenderness and often other symptoms, such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, anxiety, and bowel dysfunction.

Doctors have officially been studying the condition since the 1800’s, and in 1816 University of Edinburgh surgeon, Dr. William Balfour gave the first medical description of Fibromyalgia, and identified the described tender points for what they are. Some suggest there are even earlier accounts of the description of fibromyalgia symptoms, such as in the Bible, Book of Job:  “Depression haunts my days, my weary nights are filled with pain as though something were relentlessly gnawing at my bones.”  To the modern-day fibromyalgia sufferer, this description sounds very close to home.
